Apple Releases the iPad

Apple on Wednesday the 27th of January 2010 announced what it is calling the bridge between notebooks and smart phones. The device that looks like the iPhone and iPod touch’s older and much bigger sibling even with a home button, and a 9.7” glass touch screen.

The iPad is half an inch thin, and uses a 9.7-inch IPS display, with a 1GHz Apple A4 processor, and 16 to 64GB of flash storage. It also includes an accelerometer, compass, microphone, built-in speakers and wireless in the form of 802.11n, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and 3G. The unit's battery is said to last a month on standby, and 10 hours when running video.

The device will have a number of different uses from playing games to watching videos to even reading e-books and described by steve jobs as “so much more intimate than a laptop and so much more capable than a smart phone”

One of the most important features of this revolutionary new product is the focus on the ebook reader. Apple is introducing a new category in their Online iTunes store along with the App store and Media store, the online books store. The notion behind which is having a book shelf which Apple has tied in with major book publishers to stock up pm their library.

The iPad is a device close to iPods and the iPhone with the technologies being similar to the iPhone / iPod touch showcasing powerful gaming engines and will be better for sharing photos than a smart phone. The iPad also comes set up for tilt and touch gaming using the accelerometer and touch screen. Because of the larger screen size than a smart phone, and lighter weight than a laptop, video enjoyment is an upside to the iPad.

The iPad’s great 9.5” screen makes it a breeze to type on and play around with. As a testament to how great it is, Apple launched a new version of iWork which was created specifically to work with the iPad and it’s multi-touch gestures. And if working on the On-screen keyboard works at being less preferred than a keyboard, the iPad has an option of working with an external Keyboard which connects to the dedicated keyboard dock.
